What is Automatic Bidding or Deputy Bid?
Automatic bidding is a helper that helps you place your bid even when you not in front of your computer to know when you have been outbid. The automatic bidding mechanism is an agent that works for you. You can give the automatic bidding mechanism instructions by telling it the maximum amount that you are willing to bid. The automatic bidding mechanism will carry out your instructions by automatically placing another bid once you have been outbid. This will continue until the automatic bidding mechanism reaches the maximum amount that you have instructed it to bid.
How come the bid history says that someone outbid me by less than the bid increment?
There is no way that someone could have outbid you by less than the bid increment. The site will not allow someone to bid less than the bid increment. However, the bid history may make it appear that someone has bid less than the bid increment if they were using automatic bidding. When someone uses the automatic bidding mechanism to automatically place their highest bid for them, the software stores the person's maximum bid on the server. If a second person were to place a bid that was just over the first person's maximum bid, then the software would record the first person's maximum bid in the bid history. If the second person's maximum bid was very close to the first person's bid (less than one bid increment), then the software would record the current bid at the second person's maximum bid once the smoke had cleared.
For example, Let's say Joe wanted to buy a particular printer in the auction. The starting bid was at $15 and the bid increment was $1. Let's say Joe wanted the printer and used the automatic bidding mechanism to automatically place his bid for him by entering a maximum bid of $70. The current bid would rise to $16 and Joe's maximum bid would be stored on the server. Now, let's say Sara also wanted to place a bid for the printer and entered a maximum bid of $70.01. A fierce bidding war would ensure and the current bid would rise to $70.01. Sara would be the high bidder at $70.01and Joe's name would appear in the bid history at $70. This would occur because Sara's bid of $70.01 is well above the current bid of 16 plus the bid increment of $1.
Why didn't I win the auction even though my bid was the same as another person?
The auction calculates the winner of the auction based on the highest price first, then largest quantity, and then by the time of the bid. If you bid the same price as another person and you have both bid the same quantity, the person that placed their bid first will win. For example, let's say John and Jerry each placed bids for two cables out of a lot of 4 for $40. John placed his bid at 10:40 PM on Friday July 20, 1999 and Jerry placed his bid at 10:42 on the same day. John would be the winner since he placed his bid two minutes before Jerry.
Why does it record someone as the winner when we have the same price and quantity and I placed my bid before them?
This occurs when someone is using the automatic bidding mechanism to bid for them. The person has placed their maximum bid before you placed your bid. The software stores their maximum bid and time on the server for the duration of the auction. If their automatic bidding mechanism places a bid for them, it will use the time that they placed their maximum bid. Automatic bidding rewards people that place their bids earliest.
How does automatic bidding work?
Automatic bidding is a very efficient way for you to bid on an item on this site. It is designed to make it easier for you to place bids and easier to monitor the status of an auction. Automatic bidding is a helper that helps you to respond to a rival bidder even when you not in front of your computer to know when you have been outbid. Automatic bidding is an agent that works for you to place bids. You can give automatic bidding instructions by telling automatic bidding the maximum amount that you are willing to bid. The automatic bidding mechanism will carry out your instructions by placing another bid for you once another bidder exceeds your current bid. This will continue until automatic bidding reaches the maximum amount that it has been instructed to bid or the rival bidder gives up.
Example: Let's say that you see a scanner that you want to buy. The starting bid for the scanner is $10 and the bid increment is $1. You really want scanner and would be willing to pay up to $70. Instead of placing a bid for $10 and being outbid for another bidder, you could use automatic bidding to place a maximum bid of $70. This maximum bid instructs the automatic bidding mechanism to place a bid up to $70. If you place a maximum bid of $70, the automatic bidding mechanism will place a bid for you that is the lowest possible winning bid. In this case it would be $10. This way you don't pay any more for your product than you have to. If someone were to come along and place a bid for this scanner before the end of the auction for $20 the automatic bidding mechanism would go to work for you. The automatic bidding mechanism would place a bid for you of $20, and would record your bid first because you placed your maximum bid before the other bidder placed his bid of $20. Since your bid was placed first, you would be the current high bidder for the auction.
